Request New tamu.* Newsgroup

All proposals must show local TAMU discussion. We do not want to repeat existing forums from the Big 8 (international) hierarchies.

The procedure for getting a new tamu.* newsgroup created follows similar guidelines as other hierarchies. Below is a basic set of questions that need to be answered to get a request for a new newsgroup approved.

  • Who is the intended audience for the group?
  • Is it primarily announcements or is it discussion oriented?
  • Can you demonstrate any existing traffic for this topic? How many posts per day?
  • Is there some other newsgroup that can be used instead of creating a new one?
  • If there is no newsgroup, is there a mailing list? How many members? How many messages per day?
  • Is there is a Web site? Can your goal be achieved with it?

All requests for new tamu.* newsgroups should be sent to news@tamu.edu.

If a newsgroup is created, then it should find a place in the current TAMU hierarchy, i.e., follow naming conventions. The group name should avoid acronyms or abbreviations, if at all possible. It also must have a charter. Newsgroups with no expire date will be reviewed each semester to determine whether they should continue to exist.

Coursework Newsgroups

Newsgroups created for a specific class will use the class catalog designation as a name, e.g., History 105 would be tamu.classes.hist105. If this is insufficient for uniqueness, the lecturer's initials will be appended to the end, e.g., tamu.classes.hist105jd.

Although class related newsgroups do not require a charter, we strongly recommend posting the class syllabus to the group.

Official Campus Organizations

  • The person or group requesting a newsgroup must be directly involved with the Texas A&M campus at College Station
  • The topic must be specific to Texas A&M, e.g., a class taught here, or an organization recognized by the Student Programs Office.

Newsgroups created for an organization will fall under the tamu.org.* sub-hierarchy.
