Importing Webmail Contacts

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to import contacts from the old Neo Webmail interface over to the new Texas A&M Email client. It's not a very difficult process and should only take a few minutes, so lets go ahead and get started.

From gateway.tamu.edu, click on "Webmail." After February 2nd, this link will change to read "Retired Email System", but will continue to take you to the same page. Log in with your netid and password. Once there, click the Addresses link on the top left.

Then scroll down the page to "Address book export." You don't need to change any of the default settings; just click "Export to CSV file."This will create a "comma separated value" file or CSV file. Save this to your desktop.

Next, you'll need to make one minor modification to the CSV file in order for it to import smoothly into the new TAMU email client. Open the CSV file. By default it opens in Excel, or if you don't have excel, it'll open in a text editor, like NotePad or Text Edit if you're on a mac. Look for a field called "label". Rename it to "notes." Save it and close.

Next we're going to import this CSV into TAMU Email. Simply navigate to email.tamu.edu, and log in with your NetID and password. Once you've logged in, click the "Preferences Tab." Under Preferences, click "Address Book". You should now see an Import/Export form. In the import field, click the "Browse" button to locate your csv file. Once you've found it, click "Import .CSV File".

A window will open asking you to "Choose Address Book", where you want to save these contacs. Click your desired folder. At default you may choose either "Contacts" or "Emailed Contacts". You can also create a new book, if you prefer, by clicking the "New Button" at the bottom left. Once you've chosen your folder, click OK. A green dialog box appears which says "Importing" When completed, the dialog box will notify you how many contacts were successfully imported.

Finally, click the "Address Bookk" tab, and go to your specified book where you chose to save your contacts and verify that they have been imported correctly. If you experience any problems or difficulties, please contact Help Desk Central at 979.845.8300 or at helpdesk@tamu.edu.
